Hugo Chavez's Next Move to Remain in Power

Hugo Chavez the controversial President of Venezuela has announced as expected, that he wants to change the countries constitution to eliminate term limits for the President. Under the current constitution, the President is limited to two six year terms. In the U.S. we can see that incumbent politicians have a tremendous edge in winning re-election even when the voting is fair. In Mr. Chavez's case not only does he have the advantage of being an incumbent, but there are also many questions on just how fair the Presidential elections are in Venazuela. While changing the constitution would be good for Mr. Chaves, it is doubtful that it will be good for Venezuela.

This latest move to consolidate power goes hand in hand with his taking control of the dominate media in the country, and his threats against foreigners who criticize him.

Mr. Chavez's actions should be a lesson for all of us in just how fragile a democratic society is. There is always a person or group of persons who will try to take power for themselves. Of course like Mr. Chavez, they will claim that they are acting for the greater good. Just like Adolf Hitler was only trying to improve the lives of his fellow Germans.

The citizens of a democracy must stay informed and stay involved in the political process in order to protect their freedoms. If you do not, you will get the government that you deserve.
