The Case Against Licenses for Illegal Aliens

The debate for drivers license for illegal aliens was brought to the surface in a Democratic Presidential Debate last Tuesday. The people driving this debate are advocacy groups for illegal aliens and the Democratic party. Yep, the Democratic party figures that they will be the big winner if illegal aliens get drivers licenses. That is why so many Democrats are willing to back an idea that means nothing but trouble for American society.

The following are reasons why we should not support drivers license for illegal aliens:

1. Loss of confidence in your identity. The defacto standard of identification for American citizens is the drivers license. It is used to prove who you are, and in many cases, establishes your identity as an American citizen. So what standard of identification will be used if anyone can get a drivers license? Will drivers license be trusted any more? In an age where identity theft is rampant, how much harder will it be for someone to prove their identity if you relax the requirements for getting a license? You will in effect make the drivers license no more than a certificate of competency for operating a vehicle.

Also consider this, In an article on Stateline.org, Francisco Estrada of the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund opposed one California law that would have required an extensive background check. He was concerned that it could actually lead to more deportations of illegal aliens. So not only does he want license for illegal aliens, but he also wants minimal background checks on the person applying.

2. The Motor Voter Bill. In 1994 Bill Clinton signed the National Voter Registration Act. This bill made it a federal law that anyone who applies for a drivers license or public assistance will be given the opportunity to register to vote. This bill of course was designed to increase the number of people registering to vote. But in reality, it is a ploy to get more people to register as Democrats. After all people who are on public assistance are almost always going to vote for Democrats. They have been brain washed into believing that they cannot survive without Democratic largess.

But the thing I find most disturbing is this; the push to give illegal aliens drivers license did not occur until after the motor voter bill was past. This is not a coincidence. It is a calculated move on the Democratic party to increase their political power by promoting a system that makes it easier for illegal aliens to vote.

3. Devalue citizenship. More and more you see this push by progressive political groups and so called immigration advocates like The National Council of La Raza ( the race ); to classify all immigrants as just that, immigrants. Lets not quibble over who is here legally and who is illegal. After all we all want the same thing, a chance at a better life. But this thinking ignores all of the problem that illegal immigration creates. One of these is the push by support groups to provide government benefits to illegal aliens. Many of the government health care giveaway programs include providing free medical care to illegal aliens while citizens have to pay for medical insurance. So why become a citizen? Why should you take the effort to file the paper work, learn about our history and culture, learn english, and integrate into our society when you can get all of the benefits of citizenship without the responsibility.

By giving illegal aliens the same status as citizens and legal aliens, you take away the incentive to integrate and become a citizen. You say that wont' happen? 30 years ago nobody would imagine the amount of free government programs that are made available to illegals. 20 years ago you would have been kicked out of office to suggest giving drivers license to illegal aliens. Today not only are there serious considerations to provide drivers license to illegals aliens, but also free health care, and education benefits equivalent to a U.S. citizens. And the Motor Voter Bill opens the door to voting for illegal aliens. It is well known that illegal aliens have found ways to vote in elections and this is only going to increase. I am surprised that some government officials are not advocating voting rights already.

Removing the incentive to integrate and become a citizen will only lead to more divisions in our society.
