Does Mexico Give Drivers Licenses to Illegals?
The debate about giving drivers licenses to Illegal Aliens has come to the surface again. And once again, I think we can learn something from our neighbors to the South. Chris Hawley In an article for the Arizona Daily News does just that by examining Mexican laws regarding drivers licenses for foreigners. The article points out that Mexico will only issue drivers license to foreigners who posses a valid Visa and Mexican citizens are required to provide proof of citizenship. This seems like a sensible way to handle the issuing of drivers licenses.
I found two quotes from Hawley's article to be very telling. One of them was from Alejandro Ruíz, director of education at the Mexican Automobile Association. He said, "When it comes to foreigners, we're a little more strict here." And another quote from an unidentified Mexican official said, "Our constitution has certain restrictions for foreigners."
So how come we in America are so willing to allow illegal aliens to come in to our country and do as they please? Why should we give illegals drivers license when Mexico and other countries don't? I understand how it benefits Mexico and the illegal alien population, but how is this a benefit to America? Why is it that we are made to feel guilty about protecting our laws and national sovereignty?
If there was a guest worker program, then I would understand giving a temporary and different looking drivers license for the duration of their visa. But to just hand out drivers licenses to anyone without validating that they are a legal resident is just bad policy.
