The danger of polarized politics

The tragedy of todays shootimg of Representative Gabrielle Giffords is the unfortunate by product of a split society. Myself and others have talked about how special interest groups and political pressure groups pull the strings of government while the average person, who just wants to bring back common sense is pushed to the sidelines angry and frustrated. You know that as soon as this happened the political spin misters started looking for a scapegoat. The Progressives gleefully proclaim this is the work of the Tea Party while the Far Right shout back this was some Anarchist kid brainwashed by the Liberals.

The sad truth is they are both to blame. When the far left and the far right trade barbs at each other, they are attempting to compel other people to see the world in their terms. They want them to reject any ideas that do not fit in with their ideology no matter what the merit. In good times these extreme antagonist do not cause much harm, and sometimes help to bring up issue that the majority may be ignoing.

But in times of stress, and these are stressful times. It is easy for extreme ideas to lead to violence whether intended or not. That is because there will always be some people that are easily pushed over the edge. Who will take such an extreme view of the world that they believe that the only solution is violance.

So who is to blame for todays tragedy? We are all to blame. Every profanity laced posting on your favorite website. Every derogatory comment. Every time we hear or read a comment that starts with, "The other_political_party did this to us!" We are all to blame for the discord in the country.

So lets start talking about what could be. And how to solve our problems. Lets start working together and calm down the rhetoric to avoid filling the mind of the next would be shooter with fodder for their hatred.
