"A wise and frugal government..."

On March 4, 1801 newly elected President Thomas Jefferson gave his first inaugural address.  One famous quote from that address is extremely relevant to the issues were are facing today.  I hope that people will take this quote to heart in the days ahead...

"A wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned."  -  Thomas Jefferson

Consider the first part of the quote "restrain men from injuring one another..."  When I see that I think of tort reform and how the legal system in order to enrich themselves, have created a society where anyone can sue anyone over anything.  The person who initiates the law suit pays nothing, as the lawyers will work based on the success of the suit.  On the other hand the person being sued has to pay a lawyer to defend them and in this society they often lose even when they have done no wrong.  The cost of these lawsuits have become so unfair and expensive that the majority of innocent victims will settle at a lower cost to avoid being ruined by a greater cost.  Therefore the lawyers who initiate the suit can count on winning most by default.  Just go to The Faces of Lawsuit Abuse to see stories of honest hardworking people ruined by the legal extortion of the lawyers.

Second, "shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned."  Consider all the taxes we pay.  And all the politicians saying that they need to raise taxes in order to pay for the government.  Isn't that taking away our bread and giving it to someone else?
