If you do not believe that this sentiment lies at the heart of most politicians then you are naive. You only have to look at the way politicians cling to power in the face of a crisis.
Just look at recent events from Carl Kruger and Vincent Leibell in New York, Gordon Brown and other British politicians, corruption in India, China, Putin's ruling elite in Russia, to Nancy Pelosi trying to hang onto her leadership position, and finally dictators such as Gaddafi fight to retain their power.
That is why the Founding Fathers of America chose to split power in the country among various branches of government and between a central authority and local authority. That is why we need to be very very careful before we willingly give the central government more power. Because once these politicians get a taste of power, they will not willingly give it back...
