What socialism has wrought
Socialism and the utopian concept of a society that freely shares all with all has been with America since it's foundation. The fact that it was discarded early is a testament to it's inability to overcome the human nature of greed.
Socialism received a huge boost in this country with Franklin Roosevelt's Great Society and has slowly worked it's way into the American body like a cancer that attaches itself to healthy cells and chokes them to death. In modern times the liberal agenda in general and the Progressive movement in particular have been pushing their socialist dogma more and more on a reluctant public that deep down inside knows better.
The results of their labor is a gradual transformation of a culture of individualism and entrepreneurship into a culture of narcissism and entitlement takers. Progressives like to talk about the greed of the rich, and you cannot argue that it does not exist. But ironically enough there is another kind of greed. The greed of the poor and the immature. The greed of those who feel like they deserve to take from the labor of others. The greed of the entitlement takers.
For what would you call a person who is young and healthy but chooses to take welfare rather than work? What would you call a person who carries a sign and says you have to pay for my college? What would you say to a person who drops out of school because they didn't feel like doing their homework but shouts out, you need to give me a job? What do you say to the young college graduate who says, you have to give me an executive job. I shouldn't have to start at the bottom. What do you say to a single mom with six kids from six different fathers who yells at the camera saying, "This is your fault! Someone has to pay for my kids."
The one common thread among all these people is the belief that someone else owes them a living. That someone else needs to be responsible for their poor choices. That someone else needs to take care of them. The idea that people who work hard everyday, who have started at the bottom and worked their way to the top, do not deserve what they have earned; yet somehow believe they deserve whatever they want without having to worked for it. Isn't the belief that you are entitled to take from others a form of greed?
That is the curse of entitlements. The curse of Socialism that leads to poverty and misery for all. That is what the Progressives have burdened our country with. That is what socialism has wrought.
