How can we ever learn to live in peace
A couple of days ago I was responding to a commenter about the use of a word that they thought was a bit extreme. Part of my response was, "it is difficult when discussing any point of view that is
controversial or elicits strong emotions and is the bane of any rational
discussion whether it is politics, religion, or even sports."
Sadly, it wasn't soon after when I heard about the tragedy in Egypt where 73 people lost their lives at a soccer game. How is it that people can be so out of control that they would go on a rampage at a sporting event that is meant for entertainment? I don't intend this to be an insult to the Egyptians, there are many other examples around the world where rabid fans have killed or caused sever injury to people. For awhile in the U.S. it was fashionable (to some) for the home town fans of a winning team to go out into the streets and riot and destroy property. It is crazy, and these where the fans celebrating their teams victory.
So if people around the world are so willing to inflict violence on others because of a sporting event. How can the world ever learn to live in peace with other religions where the emotions and identity experienced is a lot deeper then that of a sports fan?
How can political parties learn to work together? How can nations learn to live together? Will we ever learn to look past the facade of race, religion, national identity and instead see the person inside?
